I think my partner Scott and I reached a new level of patriotism this year.
Firstly we turned a public holiday Thursday into a long weekend by taking the Friday off as well – doesn’t get much more Aussie than that.
We then chose to spend our self-made Australia Day long weekend in Canberra – our nations capital.
More than a few people questioned this decision - actually make that every single person I spoke to.
‘Why Canberra?’ and an incredulous look was what I got whenever I mentioned our mini-break destination of choice.
Admittedly Canberra doesn’t have a reputation of being the most exciting place on earth. It’s claims to fame are fireworks.. and ah…. porn.
Prior to beginning our trip we had hopes of seeing our Prime Minister make a speech – if we were lucky.
We never expected to actually meet her!
Meeting Australia Day ambassador Adam Gilchrist and Australian of the Year Geoffrey Rush was icing on the cake.
Australia Day 2012 was an incredible experience I know we’ll never forget.
P.S. The fireworks in Queanbeyan were awesome! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5Mw08SCjQg

Haha do you remember that Canberra Tourism add campaign where it was just a bunch of people doubtfully asking, “Canberra? Do they have any good restaurants/ galleries/ things to do?” …and then the voiceover would inform them that yes, actually, it did
I’d like to go some day so it’s good to see you enjoyed it. And Geoffrey Rush! Amazing!
I do! That is funny
We did actually visit a stand-out restaurant in Gundaroo – about 45 minutes from Canberra. It’s called Grazing – one of the most beautiful meals I’ve had in ages. Gorgeous little town too – can thoroughly recommend it! I hope you get there one day
That sounds like a fun day! I’d love to visit Australia. It’s a long trip from Texas, though.
I have nominated you for one of three awards. Please do come by and see what you’ve won. It’s like a box of cracker jacks, with a fake award at the bottom! Congrats, blog friend!
